Define Your Buyer Persona

The best way to do this is by first creating a buyer persona based on who your target audience is. Create an avatar and fully flesh them out by answering the following questions: 

  • What’s their name?
  • What’s their gender?
  • Where do they live?
  • How old are they?
  • What are their pain points?
  • What makes them happy?
  • Are they facing a challenge right now?
  • What are their goals in life?
  • What kind of solution are they looking for?
  • How would they want to be spoken to?
  • What kind of content would they be looking for?

Take the time to answer this list in its entirety and then keep it handy at all times so you can refer to it when making decisions about content.

If you’re considering something that doesn’t fit into this buyer’s persona, you may be on the wrong path. 

Define Your Brand Pillars

The next step is to clearly define your brand’s pillars. These are the 3-5 topics that you want your company to be associated with.

These may be based on the products and services that you offer such as business coaching, pet grooming, or golf clubs. Whatever those pillars are, your content should consistently point to them. 

After you define your pillars, create a spreadsheet with a column for each pillar and space below to fill in ideas that would help communicate or promote them. Use this as a place to brainstorm and store ideas for future content. 

Create Your System

Now that you know who you’re talking to and what you’re talking about, you don’t have to waste time trying to figure those things out and can instead focus on creating a template that can be used over and over again.

This template will be adjusted as needed for whatever content you’re creating but the overall process will remain the same. 

Create a template for each of your brand pillars that can be tweaked before publishing. Take your time to create these since you’ll only have to do this once. 

Now that you have your templates, create your system or standard operating procedure (SOP).

Clearly define what you’re going to do every time you need to create content starting with what system you’ll open (word processor, designer, social media), and then determine what will happen at every step afterward.

This should be saved in a simple spreadsheet for easy reference and sharing and may include fields such as: 

  • Create a new file in the proper folder
  • Label the type of content to create
  • What pillar does this content relate to?
  • Create Content 
    • Keywords Included?
    • SEO Details
    • Has it been edited?
    • Are your images and links sourced?
  • Upload to the appropriate platform
  • Schedule post

Your list may not look exactly like this but the main thing is to be sure that all of your team understands the importance of using it and that they’re on board with it for all content creation moving forward.
