Unveiling the Digital Identity: A Deep Dive into IP WHOIS Lookup and Internet

Governance

Every device connected to the internet has its IP address.

It is a string of numbers that works as a means of communication between devices.

Every IP registrant has to submit their valid personal information to ICANN before getting an IP address. And this data is available on the WHOIS IP lookup tool.

Stay tuned to the article if you want to know more about the IP WHOIS Lookup tool.

What is IP WHOIS Lookup?

The IP WHOIS Lookup tool is used to find who an IP belongs to.

It gives you information like contacts, geolocation, Regional Internet Registry, and autonomous system number of the assigned IP owner.

It also gives information about the block an IP is allocated to.

All the IP allocation and registration information are managed by the Internet Assigned Number Authority (IANA).

The Regional Internet registry is responsible for the IP address allocation in a specific region.

These are mainly divided into five groups. Each has its own rules and policies for IP allocation.

However, all the data is stored by the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names And Numbers (ICANN).

Simply, WHOIS Lookup is a free service that provides you with the technical information and name of the registered IP address Registrant.

What Information is Available In WHOIS Database?

While Registering a domain, users need to add valid personal information. Otherwise, he might lose his Domain address.

Even the ICANN has declared that ‘if the user provides inaccurate information and doesn’t change it within a week or does not respond to an inquiry for 15 days, his Domain will be suspended.

Domain registration requires common information like name, geolocation, phone number, and E-mail address. However, this information must be valid and easily searchable by any internet user through the WHOIS Lookup tool.

However, if any registrant is not confident about showing his personal information, he can use the Domain registration privacy policy. Here instead of displaying your information on the WHOIS Lookup tool, you can give it to the registrar.

And the registrar will work as a middleman and solve any query between the customer and the registrant.

Otherwise, a general Whois Lookup also provides other information like administrator contact and technical information.

This is quite useful for business when you want to get the know-how of other webmasters.

Moreover, it also protects your Domain from intruders.

You can directly contact the registrant and check if anyone has entered the IP address.

What is The Regional Internet Registry?

There are five Regional Internet Registries worldwide. Each is allocated to a specific block in the world.

They are responsible for managing, distributing, and registering IP in their region. Each RIR has its own rules and policies that its customers have to follow.

However, every RIR submits its data to the Internet Assigned Number Authority (IANA). This manages the allocation and distribution of information and displays it on WHOIS IP Lookup.

So that the user can easily search the registrant’s personal information on the tool.

The five regional Internet Registration groups are

  • African Network Information Center (AFRINIC)
  • American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN)
  • Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC)
  • Latin American and Caribbean Network Information Centre (LACNIC)
  • Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC)

Together all these RIRs form a Number Resource Organizations (NRO).

They are responsible for allocating every internet user a specific and unique IP address.

The numbers for IP addresses are officially generated by IANA. Hence, they keep the data and provide it on WHOIS IP lookup for users to connect to their respective registrant.

What Are The WHOIS Lookup Limitations?

Today over 59.9% of the world’s population is using the internet. All their information is stored by IANA. And the WHOIS IP Lookup has a massive count of registered domains.

Each IP address has a query limit of 1000 requests per day. If this limit is exceeded then the IP address might be temporarily blocked for the next 24 hours.

However, if the same IP crosses the query limit for 3 consecutive months then it might be permanently blocked.

Moreover, it won’t be available on WHOIS IP lookup for an entire year.

Hence, professional programmers buy 200 to 300 IPs to protect their IPs from reaching the query limit.

Conclusion

In general, the WHOIS lookup protocol is used to identify who an IP address belongs to and how to contact them. This helps Internet users to communicate with their service provider regarding connection issues. All their information is stored by ICANN.

It is further distributed by  Regional Internet Registry to provide an efficient network in all five blocks worldwide. The WHOIS helps the internet manage its security and connection.
